The Edelweiss has immigrated from Central Asia into the Alps. This happened after the last glacial period. At that time, the Alps were free of vegetation and resembled steppes, because the glacial tanks, which covered most of the mountains, had just melted. Close relatives of the Alpen-Edelweiss occur in high-altitude steppe areas of Central Asia and in East Asia.
